How do the Victoria Secret Angels Train

How do the Victoria's Secret Angels Train

By Fitasport | Posted on 07-02-2018
There is no Victoria, and she doesn’t have any secrets.

Founder Roy Raymond picked the brand’s name in 1977, simply by deciding that he wanted to mimic the look of a Victorian boudoir in his first shop.
His idea was to create a store in which men didn’t feel embarrassed when buying underwear for their wives.

Victoria's Secret models might look effortlessly sexy, but it can take months of work to get them ready for the brand's annual fashion show — and lots of help from people like Justin Gelband, a certified personal fitness trainer based in New York City.

Gelband estimates he's trained an average of six models per show for more than 10 years, including many of Victoria's Secret's official Angels.
For the 2017 show, he worked with Candice Swanpoel, Sara Sampaio, Grace Elizabeth Harry, Alexina Graham, Sanne Vloet, and Megan Williams.

I'm a lucky, fortunate man, being able to train the most beautiful women in the world

Victoria's Secret models undeniably have some of the most beautiful and envied bodies on the planet.

And as they showed off their incredibly toned physiques at the lingerie brand's annual show in Shanghai last week, you can't help wonder how they get in such phenomenal shape.

So how do they achieve those washboard abs and perfectly sculpted thighs – and is it doable for us mere mortals?

You'd imagine it takes a rather depressing diet of just lettuce and lemon water to look that good.
But not so according to stunning Elsa Hosk, who insists she loves her food and works out so she can eat whatever she wants.

How do you get in shape for Shanghai?

The reputation of the models' workouts precedes them as the “body of an Angel” is put on a pedestal as the most sculpted physique in fashion.

Adriana Lima AngelAdriana Lima:
Each year, I try to be physically and mentally prepared for the show.
People say that we train like Olympic athletes and I think although obviously it’s a much different goal, we do work very hard to achieve how we want to look and feel as we walk down the runway for millions of people.

Lily Aldridge:
I work out with Ballet Beautiful founder Mary Helen Bowers six times a week, sometimes twice a day leading up to the show.

Martha Hunt:
I also do Ballet Beautiful, as it’s great for my mental state and strengthening my body.
Barre helps to tone and sculpt my glutes, legs and core without overdoing it, and ballet helps with graceful transitions between poses.
I also work out with a trainer to incorporate weights and cardio.

Sara Sampaio:
I work out with my trainer Justin Gelband, and do Pilates at Flex Studios in New York around five times a week, depending on how my body feels and my schedule.
Resting is as important as working out.
With Justin, we do a lot of resistance training, some cardio and a lot of butt work with ankle weights.

When did you start training for Shanghai?

Adriana Lima:
As a model I always have to be ready, but during the few months leading up to the show I try to eat very lean and green, drink lots of water and work out almost every day.
I train all year long, but I kick it up a little bit leading up to the show.

Lily Aldridge AngelLily Aldridge:
I work out all year long, I love to be in shape and feel good.
We just ramp up the workouts closer to the show.

Martha Hunt:
Ditto.

Sara Sampaio:
I started after fashion week, so around two months before the show.
For me, the most important part is maintaining a balanced diet, which is a challenge because I love bread, pasta and all Mediterranean foods.
I try to eat cleaner with lots of protein, veggies and fruit.

How will you continue preparing once you get to Shanghai?

Lily Aldridge:
Luckily, there are a group of my trainers who will be flying out to Shanghai and I’ll be able to train with them before the show.
I will work out the day before, but the day of the show I’ll relax and just go with the adrenaline of the day.

Lily Aldridge:
My trainer will be coming to China and I will train in the mornings before work.
But it’s also important to relax after travelling so far.

Martha Hunt AngelMartha Hunt:
I’ll continue ballet as it makes me feel in tune with my body and like I’m refining a craft.

Sara Sampaio:
I think in Shanghai I’ll just try to rest as much as possible and not get anxious about show day!
It’s not extra workouts there that will change my body!

How do you stay healthy when travelling?

Adriana Lima:
I try to minimise my travel in the run-up to the show because for me, consistency is key.
If I must travel, I try to take my meals with me, so I know exactly what’s going into my body and I don’t have to rely on figuring out what to eat at different hotels or restaurants.

Lily Aldridge:
I drink lots of water and try to sleep on the plane.

Martha Hunt:
Nutritional supplements!
I just started travelling with nutritional supplements.
I put them in my water, and they really make a difference in how I feel and my skin.

Sara Sampaio AngelSara Sampaio:
That’s the hardest part for me!
When I’m jet lagged I don’t eat healthily at all!
I just want comfort food, like pasta and pizza.
I'll try my best to stop myself from doing that.

How the Victoria's Secret models get in shape

Healty 'normal' woman have between 21 and 24% body fat, while athletes have between 14 and 20%. Anything lower and you risk organ failure and death.

The girls generally start training a month before the casting and should they be chosen, they continue to train, often upping the intensity until the show.
Nutrition is an important part of the process.
The goal is to have the greatest show body they can for the purpose of wearing lingerie.

So, how often do they workout?
Every girl is different.
There are girls that work with me twice a day and there are girls that alternate days with yoga or ballet.
Every body is truly unique, says Olajide Jr.

Just from looking at Instagram though, it's safe to say that achieving the toned, sculpted body of a Victoria's Secret Angel is a full time job in itself.
For those who are tempted to employ some of the techniques, here is everything you need to know...

Playground basics
Skipping might bring back childhood memories, but Adriana Lima has been using the playground game as way to get into shape for this year's show.
The model has shared several short videos on her Instagram account of her skipping with her trainer.
Perhaps it's time we all dusted off that skipping rope...

Boxing benefits
Boxing has seen a huge resurgence in popularity over the past couple of years, especially among women.
The technique not only gives you a full body workout, but it also helps improve your coordination.
No doubt, with the knowledge that Lima uses the sport to get in shape for the show, boxing will remain a fitness favourite for the foreseeable future.

Strong core
Using a range of gym equipment, including a medicine ball and weights, Martha Hunt proved that a strong core is essential.
It's no surprise that they've all got impeccable abs.

Weighted lifts
Romee Strijd's trainer Kirk Myers revealed that strength training is at the core of many of the Victoria's Secret routines by sharing a video of the model doing weighted squats with a kettle bell.

Equipment-free training
Kelly Gale proved that there's no such thing as a holiday when you're a Victoria's Secret model.
In a quick Instagram video, the model unveiled her equipment-free workout that can be done anywhere, at anytime.

Candice Swanepoel the best part about training for the show is the amount of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears you put into something you always dreamed of doing.
